British High Commission organizes Great Debate competition

– The British High Commission continued the fifth edition of its GREAT Debate competition with a regional round at the FAST National University in Peshawar.

The regional round in Peshawar followed previous regional rounds in Lahore and Quetta. The competition featured 23 students from universities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

At the end of an intense competition, Ali Muzahir from FAST National University and Maham Malik from Khyber Medical College Peshawar were declared the winner and runner-up respectively. The GREAT Debate competition is taking place from December 2019 to March 2020 in six cities across Pakistan.

FouziaYounis, Director of Communication at the British High Commission said: “We are delighted to bring the GREAT Debate 2020 to KP and its capital Peshawar, one of Pakistan’s most historic and cultural cities. This platform complements the work  we  do in education in  the  province  through our Department for International Development (DFID) and the British Council.

“KP has always provided our competition with strong debaters and we look forward to seeing the winner and runner-up do well in the final.” Dr Tariq, Campus Director, FAST NU Peshawar, said: “We are grateful to the British High Commission for providing the prestigious platform of the GREAT Debate 2020 to the students of KP. We are expecting long-lasting intellectual relationships and such opportunities in the future as well.”

This is the fifth annual edition of the British High Commission’s GREAT Debate competition. Since 2015, the competition has taken place across 15 universities and 12 cities in Pakistan.

The previous winners of the GREAT Debate competition have included: GaudhanAslam from Forman Christian College in Lahore, Taha Ahmed from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Mohiba Ahmed and Haris Ali Virk from Government College University in Lahore.
